Goniatites are a type of sea creature called an ammonoid. They are part of a group of animals called Goniatitida, which evolved from an older group called Agoniatitida about 390 million years ago. This happened during the Middle Devonian period, around a time called the Eifelian stage. Goniatites were sea creatures that lived a long time ago. They survived  one big extinction, but eventually became extinct themselves after 139 million years.
